POS Systems Buying Tips From Other BuyerZone Users
Sometimes, the best way to learn about the purchases you need to make for your business is from other people going through the same process. Here are tips submitted by other POS systems buyers.
- How long will it take to get your money?
"When looking for a POS system there are so many things to be aware of. For me the bottom-line question is where's the money! If this is something you also care about, be aware that some POS systems force you to use their credit card company. A lot of the companies I spoke with said that they hold your money for 2-3 days. If your bank also holds the money for 2-3 days, you could expect clearance of your funds to take over a week!"
--Cassandra, Retail, Miami, FL - Think beyond the basics.
"When considering POS Software be sure it can be modified to fit your business model. Don't be afraid to ask the "what if" questions."
--John M. Beatrice, Restaurant, Auburn, ME - In-person demos are a good idea
"Make sure you have the sales rep do the POS software and hardware demonstration at your location. While doing the demo we discovered we did not have the proper wiring for the system we were considering. Luckily we the sheetrock was not up so we got the wiring added just hours before it would have cost us a bundle. Identifying the proper locations for the hardware was also helpful."
--Mike Loy, Retail, Alcoa, TN - How do they treat you?
"Customer service and communication from the sales person is the one thing that helps me to determine how I will be treated in the future with the company."
--Leah Glasgo, Retail, Shenandoah, IA - Set your requirements and stick to them
"Know what you want. Avoid unnecessary extras that may look good but drive up prices."
--Hanuman Patel, Travel/Hospitality, Las Cruces, NM - Return to sender
"Always get a return policy on paper that fits your preferences. Example, if you purchase software and are not satisfied, you can not return the software and pick another program. I did not even receive the software and wanted to choose a cheaper vendor instead and they will not return my deposit. Don't let this happen to you."
--Robert, Consulting, Springfield, NJ - Run a methodical demo
"Make a list of everything you need your system to do. As demonstrations for software proceed check the items they complete off your list. When the demo is complete ask questions about anything else you need the product to handle."
--DB, Travel/Hospitality, CA - Top-level tips
"When shopping for a specific item: Compare all the features offered by all vendors. Make your decision based on the features you need allow some room for expansion, but don't over purchase. Take into consideration technical support and response. Call the support number and ask for info, this will expose you first hand to the kind of technical support you will be getting. Good luck!"
