Buying used Bobcats

Need to add a skid steer loader to your fleet of construction vehicles? BuyerZone can help. Here's what you need to know before you purchase used Bobcats or any other brand skid steer.

Used Bobcats: what's in a name?
While many people use "Bobcat" to refer generically to all skid steer loaders, it's not technically accurate. Most dealers will know what you mean if you ask them about used Bobcats, but it's best to use the generic terms "skid steer loader" or "skid steer."

“Bobcat” is actually a trademark of the Bobcat Company, a manufacturer of skid steers and many other types of construction equipment. There are eight or 10 significant manufacturers of skid steers, and when you're looking to save money by buying a used skid steer loader you shouldn't limit yourself to just one brand. Don't get pigeonholed by using the wrong term.

How to evaluate used skid steers
Like any piece of heavy-duty construction equipment, skid loaders suffer significant wear and tear over time, so careful evaluation is essential. A thorough test drive is by far the best way to evaluate a used Bobcat or other skid steer, and we're not talking about a 5 minute drive around the parking lot.

Instant Vendor Comparison

Select the vendors that you would like to compare

Be prepared to spend at least 30 to 60 minutes using the loader: dig a hole, scoop loose fill, roughly level a filled spot, do whatever your most common activities are. Drive the loader in all gears and at different speeds. If you're buying multiple attachments, take the time to switch them out and try them, too.

Some dealers will invite you to their location to do the test drive, while others will bring the loader to your location. Either approach is fine, as long as you get the chance to put the used loader through its paces.

An external inspection is also important. Look for any signs of leaking hydraulics or oil, fresh paint that might be covering rust, and any other signs of damage. Dents and dings are no reason not to buy a used skid steer – but you can use them as a starting point to ask what repairs have been done.

Choosing the right dealer
The stress and wear that skid steer loaders undergo also means that your relationship with the dealer is important for preventative maintenance and repairs – especially when buying used. You'll want to make sure the dealer you choose is familiar with used Bobcats and other brands of skid steer loaders, has excellent service policies and staff, and is someone you'll be able to work with easily.  Read more about choosing used skid steer loader dealers.
