Modern modular classrooms provide a comfortable environment for learning, but they do have a few drawbacks.
Here are some points to consider.
Benefits of modular classrooms
Probably the most compelling reason why school districts turn to modular classrooms is speed of construction.
New classrooms can be erected in as little as 45 days, instead of the 6-month timeframe for traditionally
built buildings. Modular classrooms can be added during the summer, while students and faculty are out of the
way, reducing disruption to the school year.
Modular classrooms are also less expensive than conventionally building. Where you might pay $100 to $130
per square foot for a site-built construction, modular classroom pricing can range from $55 to $60 per square
foot, including installation. Prices vary considerably based on the options you choose and your location, but
modular construction is always cheaper.
Modular classrooms can also be relocated - a big advantage if your student demographics are shifting.
Drawbacks of modular classrooms
The primary drawback of modular classrooms is look and feel. While you can customize the look somewhat, if you
want your new classrooms to match the rest of your school, modular might not be the right choice.
Basic modular construction elements like the elevated entrance and somewhat shorter ceilings can make the
buildings look less stylish. While there are certainly ways to address these design elements, doing so can
increase your overall building costs.
